Chikarashiba - Chikarashiba

Japanese:
Chikarashiba - Chikarashiba

A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The rhizome is well developed and strong, the culm is clumped, and is 30-80 cm tall. The leaves are linear and 7-8 mm wide. From August to November, dark purple, cylindrical panicles are produced at the top of the culm. The spikelets are about 7 mm long and contain two florets. The branches of the sterile inflorescence fuse at the base, transitioning into a spikelet stalk 2-3 mm long that encases several spikelets, and when mature, the spikelets fall off the main axis of the spike. It commonly grows on roadsides and grasslands, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Okinawa, as well as China, Malaysia, and Polynesia. The name "chikarashiba" comes from the fact that it grows into a large stub with strong roots that require a lot of force to pull out. It grows on rocky coasts in warm regions, and is distinguished as a different species, "shimachikarashiba," with leaves only 1 mm wide.
