Kano Ikkei

A painter of the early Edo period. His given name was Shigeyoshi, and his pen name was Ikkei. He was commonly known as Naizen, succeeding his father Ikkō (Kano Naizen). It is said that he was a painter under Kano Mitsunobu, but chronologically, this is thought to have been for only a short period of time. In 1623 (Genna 9), he wrote Gososhū, which was the first systematic introduction of Chinese painting theory to Japan. In 1625 (Kan'ei 2), he was introduced to the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, and thereafter worked for the shogunate as an official painter while also working in Edo, where he produced the so-called Korean folding screens that were presented to Korea. He adopted Katsuta Chikuō's son Yoshinobu. His works are often confused with those of his father, and many points about them are unclear. One of his representative works is the Yoshino Cherry Blossom Viewing Screen (owned by the Richmond Museum of Art). 江戸前期の画家。名は重良,一渓はその号。通称は父一翁(狩野内膳)を継いで内膳。狩野光信についたと伝えるが,年代的にみて,ごくわずかの期間であったと推定される。元和9(1623)年『後素集』を書いて中国画論を日本にはじめて体系的に紹介した。寛永2(1625)年将軍徳川家光に御目見えし,以後御用絵師として幕府関係の仕事をしながら江戸で活躍し,朝鮮へ献上したいわゆる朝鮮屏風も制作した。勝田竹翁の子良信を養子にした。作品は父のものと混同され不明な点が多い。代表作に「吉野花見図屏風」(リッチモンド美術館蔵)がある。完全な形で遺る日本で最も早い画伝『丹青若木集』の著者として知られている。<参考文献>添田達嶺「狩野一庵,一翁,一渓及び栄翁重政に就いて」(『芸術』9巻13号)
