A general term for small crustaceans in the Bathynellacea order of the superorder Protoshrimp (superorder Thraupidae, superorder Acanthopoda). They live in groundwater and freshwater in caves. For this reason, they have no eyes. Their bodies are slender, about 1-2 mm long, and white and translucent. Protoshrimp may look like amphipods at first glance, but their thoracic legs are bibranched and have external limbs for swimming, and some have abdominal limbs and some do not. The telson and the telson form a tail fan, but some have a fork on the telson, showing that they are members of the subclass Malacostraca while still retaining a primitive shape.
