A former town in Higashi-Kunisaki District, on the eastern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. Rice, flowers (oysters), shiitake mushrooms, and mandarin oranges are cultivated here, and shichitoui is also produced. Nori and wakame seaweed are also cultivated here. In addition to the Ankokuji ruins, a large settlement from the late Yayoi period, there are many old temples, including Senpuku-ji Temple, Iwato-ji Temple, and Monjusan-ji Temple. In March 2006, it merged with Kunimi-cho, Musashi-cho, and Aki-cho in Higashi-Kunisaki District to become a city, Kunisaki City. Area: 112.28 km2 . Population: 13,900 (2003). 大分県国東半島東部,東国東郡の旧町。米,花卉(かき),シイタケ,ミカン栽培が盛んで,シチトウイも産する。ノリ,ワカメの養殖も行われる。弥生時代後期の大規模な集落遺跡の安国寺遺跡のほか,泉福寺,岩戸寺,文殊山寺などの古寺が多い。2006年3月,東国東郡国見町,武蔵町,安岐町と合併し市制,国東市となる。112.28km2。1万3900人(2003)。
