These deities have an ambiguous relationship with the main deity of the shrine, being roughly equal to it or of a slightly lower status, but not yet completely subordinate to it, and indicate a situation in which they have been established in the area for a relatively short time. The shrines enshrined within the grounds of a shrine are usually divided into sub-shrines (setsusha) and sub-shrines (matsushiya). Sub-shrines enshrine deities who have a close relationship with the main deity, while sub-shrines are often small shrines subordinate to the main deity. Guest deities are different from the above two, being enshrined in a corner of the worship hall where the main deity is enshrined, or in a place similar to a subordinate deity, known as a "gate guest deity," and are characterized by not yet having an independent shrine.
