Niya - Niya (English spelling)

Niya - Niya (English spelling)

The remains of an ancient settlement on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It is located about 120 km north of Minfeng County, about 320 km east of Hotan, through the Taklimakan Desert. It was first excavated in 1901 by British M. A. Stein, and three excavations were conducted in 1906 and 1914, resulting in the discovery of nearly 800 Kharoshti documents. The deciphering of these documents is shedding light on the lives of ordinary people in the ancient Loulan Kingdom. The ruins are located at the end of the Niya River, which flows out of the Kunlun Mountains, and the settlements are scattered over an area of about 7 km east to west and 20 km north to south. In 1980, the NHK Japan-China joint reporting team visited the ruins and filmed and aired the current situation.
