French painter. Born in Paris, he studied under William Bouguereau and Cabanel at the local art school. He exhibited at the Salon from 1873, and became a judge in 1898. He taught at the Académie Colarossi, and in 1902 became a professor at his alma mater's art school. His elegant and eclectic style combined the academic realism of the time with the bright colors of impressionism, and his representative works include "Daphnis and Chloe" and "Pastoral." Kuroda Seiki, Kume Keiichiro, Wada Eisaku, Okada Saburosuke, and Yamashita Shintaro all studied under him, and his influence on Western-style painting in the latter half of the Meiji period was enormous.
