Also known as the degree of dispersion, this is a statistic that indicates the degree of dispersion of data. Commonly used terms include variance, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation. Variance is the sum of the squared differences between each piece of data and the mean, and the smaller this value is, the smaller the dispersion. To see the degree of dispersion in the same units as the data, you can use the standard deviation, which is the positive square root of the variance. Since variance and standard deviation tend to increase as the mean value increases, the coefficient of variation, which is the standard deviation divided by the mean, is used to compare the degree of dispersion between data in different units or between data with significantly different central position values. The smaller the coefficient of variation, the smaller the degree of dispersion.
