A small inland sea between the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. It is connected to the Black Sea by the Bosphorus and the Aegean Sea by the Dardanelles, and separates the Asian and European sides of Turkey. In ancient times it was called the Propontis Sea. It is 280 km long from east to west, and 80 km wide at its widest point from north to south. It has an area of only 11,350 km2, but its average depth is 494 m, and in the center it is 1,355 m deep. It has an average salinity of 22‰ and no strong currents. It was formed by crustal movements from the end of the Neogene to the early Pleistocene of the Quaternary period, and is an area prone to earthquakes. There are two island groups, and the Kizil Islands near Istanbul are mainly a tourist destination. The other is the Marmara Islands, located near the Kapdau Peninsula on the southern coast. They are made up of granite, slate and marble, and since there were marble quarries there since ancient times, the Sea of Marmara is named after the Greek word marmaros, meaning marble.
