...France took until 1921 to put down the fierce resistance of the local Africans, and in 1922 established the colony of Niger and made it part of the French West African Union. Niger's independence movement was promoted in the late 1950s by the Niger Progressive Party (PPN), a Niger branch of the African Democratic Union led by the pro-French Hamani Diori, and the Niger Democratic Union (UDN) led by the leftist Djibo Bakary. In 1957, an autonomous government was granted, and in a referendum in September 1958 asking whether the country should remain within the French Community as an autonomous republic, Diori voted in favor, while Bakary advocated secession from the Community, but the result was 78% in favor. ...
