The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (established in May 1927) is an American film industry organization that bestows the awards on film. The first ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, and the awards were presented to films released in 1927/1928 in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Artistic Picture, Best Director (Drama), Best Director (Comedy), Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Story, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Technical Effects, Best Title, and an Honorary Award. The awards were awarded by calendar year from the 7th ceremony (1934). In the first ceremony, the winners were announced three months before the ceremony, but from the second ceremony onwards, the system was changed to notifying the press on the night of the ceremony. Furthermore, from the 13th ceremony, the winners were announced only at the venue on the day of the ceremony, and this system has been maintained ever since. The awards ceremony, held every year in late February (from the 1940s to the 1990s it was held in late March or early April), is the biggest annual event in the American film industry, and winners are presented with a golden nude male statuette, nicknamed the Oscar. The distinctive feature of the Academy Awards is that they are decided by a vote of the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Moreover, only those who are invited by the Academy in recognition of their achievements or contributions to the film industry can become members. Incidentally, Hayao Miyazaki, the director of "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away", was invited but declined to become a member. Strictly speaking, it is the Academy Award of Merit, which recognizes achievements in films, that is decided by the members' vote. The categories that are awarded as excellence in the Academy Awards have changed over time as the state of the film industry has changed, but at the 85th Academy Awards (2013), which covered films released in 2012, 24 categories were awarded: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Animated Feature, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Live Action Short Film, Best Animated Short, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, Best Art Direction & Set Design, Best Cinematography, Best Make-up, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Other Academy Awards awarded by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences include the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt (1886-1956) Fraternal Award, the Honorary Award, the Special Achievement Award, the Scientific and Technical Award, the Gordon E. Sawyer (1905-1980) Award, and the Special Scientific and Technical Awards.
