Shin Saimdang - Shin Shinindang

Japanese: 申思任堂 - しんしにんどう

A female painter from the mid-Joseon dynasty. Daughter of Shin Myeonghwa, the Jinsa, she was well versed in Buddhist scriptures from an early age, and was known as a talented woman with many talents, excelling in calligraphy and painting. Her son was the wife of Yi Wonsu, the observer, and Yi Yulgok, a master of Korean Confucianism. She is known as the ideal example of a good wife and wise mother. As a painter, she excelled in delicate and elegant depictions of insects, plants, and flowers reminiscent of natural history paintings, and established a unique style of beauty. However, there are few original copies remaining.

朝鮮王朝中期の女流画家。進士申命和の娘で幼時から経典に通じ，書画をよくし，多芸多才の才女として知られた。観察李元秀の妻，朝鮮朱子学の大家李栗谷は息子。良妻賢母の理想的存在として知られる。画家としては博物画を思わせる繊細で優美な草虫，花卉（かき）などに優れ，独特の様式美を確立した。ただし現存する真蹟は稀である。
