...Then it split into water ballet and sports-like rhythmic swimming. Synchronized swimming as we know it today was developed by Mrs. N. Olsen of the United States and others. It became a competitive event around 1942, and the US Championships were held in 1946. It was then made an official event at the general meeting of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, and it became even more popular and developed.
