Martin

Japanese: マルタン
Martin
Swiss composer, pianist and harpsichordist. Born in Geneva as the son of a pastor, he was devoted to JS Bach as a boy. He studied piano and composition there. He lived in Zurich, Rome and Paris from 1918 to 1925, and then settled in his birthplace in 1926, where he founded the Chamber Music Society and worked as a pianist and harpsichordist. He also became acquainted with Jacques Dalcroze, and from 1928 he taught improvisation and rhythm theory at the institute for over ten years. He is known for his unique style that blends tonality and twelve-tone technique (twelve-tone music), and he has left behind many masterpieces that combine a clear lyricism with a neat, neoclassical sense of form. His works include the Petite Sinfonia Concertante for harp, harpsichord, piano and two string orchestras (1944-1945, revised in 1946), the oratorios Die Enchantment (1938-1941) and Golgotha (1945-1948), the Violin Concerto (1951), the Harpsichord Concerto (1952), and the Requiem for voice and orchestra (1971-1972). →Harpsichord→Related topics Concerto Grosso | Christian music | Stockhausen | Fournier
