Mr. Asonuma

Japanese: 阿曾沼氏 - あそぬまうじ
Mr. Asonuma

…Even after the establishment of the manor, various difficulties continued to be encountered in the administration of the manor, and in the “Draft of the History of the Official Land Grants” written around the Bun’ei period, it was counted among “places where there were disturbances at the time” and it was written that “there was almost no official business for the official people.” In the early Kamakura period, the land steward was a joint vassal of Aki Province’s Shugo Mune Takachika, but after the Jōkyū War, the Asonuma clan, whose main base was in Shimotsuke Province, took over the position, and later achieved independence as a local lord based on the manor. [history]
The first time this place name was seen was in 1189 (Bun'ei 5) when Asonuma Hirotsuna of Asonuma-go, Shimotsuke Province, was appointed as land steward of Tono no Yasu by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Since the land stewardship of Tono no Yasu is also mentioned in the deed of succession of Oyama Hidechika, a powerful lord in Shimotsuke Province, in 1350 (Shohei 5/Kan'o 1), it is assumed that there was a dispute over the territory of Tono no Yasu between the Asonuma and Oyama clans at that time, but in reality the Asonuma clan controlled it. In 1600 (Keicho 5), Asonuma Hironaga was driven out of Tono and it came under the control of the Nanbu clan.
