〘noun〙① A cloth mat used for decorative purposes when placing furniture , etc. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999) Fukiage no Ue "For the four princes and the governor of the province, twenty rosewood folding mats , rosewood wheel -turned bowls, mats, and other items are placed in front of the people who are coming."② A cloth used to cover the table in front of the Buddha to make the Buddha seat more solemn. It is made of materials such as gold brocade or satin . Offerings and Buddhist implements are placed on top of this. [Teikin Orai (c. 1394-1428)]③ A thin plate of crystal, silver, etc. placed in an incense burner for burning incense ( Nippo Jisho (1603-04)). ④ A blank sheet of paper used to place sweets in a dish.

Uchi-shi-ku [Uchishiki]

〘名〙① 家具などを置くときに装飾用に敷く布帛(ふはく)の敷物。※宇津保(970‐999頃)吹上上「君だち四所、国の守までに、紫檀の折敷(をしき)二十(はたち)、紫檀の轆轤挽(ろくろびき)の坏(つき)ども、敷物、うちしき、御供の人の前ごとにたてわたし」② 仏前、仏座を荘厳にするため、仏前の卓上を覆う布。金襴(きんらん)、緞子(どんす)の類を用いる。この上に、供物(くもつ)、仏具などを載せる。〔庭訓往来(1394‐1428頃)〕③ 香をたくために香炉の中に置く水晶、銀製などの薄板(日葡辞書(1603‐04))。④ 菓子を器に盛るときに敷く白紙。

うち‐し・く【打敷】

〘他カ四〙 (「うち」は接頭語) その上に寝たりすわったりするために、物を平らにのべひろげる。敷く。※宇津保(970‐999頃)内侍督「しとねうちしきてゐ給て」
