Hosuseri-no-Mikoto

Japanese: 火須勢理命 - ほすせりのみこと

The name of a god in Japanese mythology. In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki myths, he is one of the three children born to the heavenly grandson Ninigi-no-Mikoto and the mountain goddess Konohana no Sakuya-hime. Considering his other name Hosusumi-no-Mikoto, he was probably named after the flames of the birthing house that had been set on fire. Originally, he was probably named after the ears of rice. The story of the conflict between his older brother Hoderi-no-Mikoto and his younger brother Hoori-no-Mikoto is the Tale of Umisachi and Yamasachi in the Kojiki. However, in the main text of the Nihon Shoki, Hosuseri is described as the first child Yamasachi, and is said to be fighting with the second child Hikohohodemi (Hoori).

日本神話にみえる神の名。記紀神話で，天孫の瓊瓊杵（ににぎ）尊と山神の女の木花開耶姫（このはなのさくやびめ）との間に生まれた3子の一人。火進（ほすすみ）命という別名を参照すれば，火を放たれた産屋（うぶや）の焰が盛りのときに生まれたための命名と考えられる。元来は稲穂にちなむ名であろう。その兄火照（ほでり）命と弟火遠理（ほおり）命の葛藤の話が《古事記》の海幸･山幸物語である。ただし《日本書紀》本文では，ホスセリが第1子山幸とされ，第2子ヒコホホデミ(ホオリ)と争う話になっている。
