1881‐1958 French novelist and playwright. A graduate of the École des Scribes, he learned scientific methods for collecting and classifying documents at an early stage, and was deeply moved by Tolstoy's War and Peace. This set the tone for his later novels. After the publication of his debut novel, Becoming! (1908), his 1913 work Jean Valois was not only recognized by Gide, but was also well received by most of the NRF-affiliated writers. The novel, which is mainly composed of drama-like dialogue, vividly depicts the anguish of a young man who supports Dreyfus, as he faces the conflicts between science and faith, and between personal justice and maintaining social order.
