French novelist and playwright. A graduate of the École des Scribes, he learned scientific methods for collecting and classifying documents at an early stage, and was deeply moved by Tolstoy's War and Peace. This set the tone for his later novels. After the publication of his debut novel, Becoming! (1908), his 1913 work Jean Valois was not only recognized by Gide, but was also well received by most of the NRF-affiliated writers. The novel, which is mainly composed of drama-like dialogue, vividly depicts the anguish of a young man who supports Dreyfus, as he faces the conflicts between science and faith, and between personal justice and maintaining social order.

フランスの小説家，劇作家。古文書学校卒業生である彼は，早くから科学的な文献収集分類方法を習得し，それに加えてトルストイの《戦争と平和》に強烈な感動を覚えた。後年の小説家の基調はここに定まったといえる。処女作《生成！》(1908)の出版の後，1913年の《ジャン･バロア》はジッドに認められたのみならず，《NRF（エヌエルエフ）》系の文学者たちのおおかたの好評を博した。戯曲風の対話を中心に構成されているこの小説では，ドレフュス擁護派の青年の，科学と信仰，個人的正義と社会の秩序維持の相克の苦悩などが鮮明に描かれている。
