A long-established company engaged in the sale of Japanese and Western books, stationery, and publishing. It is particularly known for the import and sale of Western books. In 1869, Hayashi Yuteki, a student of Fukuzawa Yukichi, founded Maruya Shosha in Yokohama, and began importing and selling Western books and medicines. In 1878, it became the first company in Japan to manufacture ink, and in 1884 imported fountain pens. As the business developed, the company moved its headquarters to Tokyo in 1880 and changed its name to Maruzen Shosha, establishing the current company in 1893. In 1897, it launched Gaku no Hi, the predecessor of the current Gakubutsu. It also handles interior architecture. In addition to its flagship store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, it has approximately 50 branches. In 2010, it merged with TRC to establish a holding company, Maruzen CHI Holdings. Maruzen was delisted.
