Also called a stone circle. A type of megalithic monument, it is a circle of natural stones. In Europe, many of them date from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, and the most famous is Stonehenge in England. They are said to be ritual sites related to sun worship, and some are said to be related to tombs. In Japan, they range from circles of standing stones 10 to 30 meters in diameter to small ones with diameters of 1 to 2 meters. The Oshoro Stone Circle in Hokkaido and the Oyu Stone Circle in Akita are famous. The age is unclear, but judging from the artifacts discovered, they are thought to be the product of the late Jomon period or a culture that followed it.

環状石籬ともいう。巨石記念物の一つで，自然石を環状に並べたもの。ヨーロッパでは新石器時代から鉄器時代にかけてのものが多くみられ，著名なものとしてイギリスのストーンヘンジがある。太陽崇拝に関係ある祭祀遺跡ともいわれ，また墳墓に関係するものもあるといわれる。日本では直径 10～30mの円形に立石を並べてあるものから，直径1～2mの小さいものまでを含めている。北海道の忍路環状石籬，秋田の大湯環状列石は有名。年代は明らかではないが，発見される遺物から判断すると，縄文時代後期あるいはその流れをくむ文化の所産であろうと思われる。
