Liatris - Gay-feather

Japanese: リアトリス - りあとりす(英語表記)gay-feather
Liatris - Gay-feather

A general term for the genus Liatris in the Asteraceae family. A cold-resistant perennial plant native to North America. Many have tuberous roots. About 40 species are known, some of which are called Kiringiku, Matsugasagiku, or Yuriazami in Japanese. The well-known L. spicata Wild. can reach a height of over 1.6 meters. The leaves are linear and numerous, becoming smaller the higher up. In June and July, the plant produces spike-like flower heads at the top of the stem. The flowers are purple-pink, with some varieties having white flowers. L. ligulistylis Schum. is shorter than the previous species, at about 45 centimeters tall. The flower heads are large and hemispherical, and grow in a raceme at the top of the stem. Together with L. scariosa Wild., it is called Tamazakiliatris. Scariosa is also called Matsugasagiku.

It is easy to cultivate, has strong cold resistance, and can grow in any soil type in sunny locations. It is generally propagated by seed, sowed in fields in April to May. It can also be propagated by division.
