Born: July 10, 1888 in Hirosaki
[Died] October 27, 1973. Tokyo sociologist and architectural scholar. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1912. Became an assistant professor at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University, and in 1920 became a professor, teaching architectural aesthetics and decorative principles until his retirement in 1959. He was interested in the lives of the people living in cities, and founded modern studies with stage designer Yoshida Kenkichi and others in an attempt to collect and record urban lifestyles and customs. Modern studies are a study that considers the present, as opposed to archaeology, which is a study that considers the past. His first survey was in 1925, and was the "Record of the Customs and Manners of Tokyo's Ginza District in Early Summer 1925," in which he collected and recorded people's clothing and behavior in Ginza, Tokyo, which was at the forefront of fashion at the time. After World War II, he advocated the study of life, and in 1972 founded the Japan Society of Life Studies. His books include "Japanese Folk Houses" (1922) and "Fashion Research" (47).

社会学者，建築学者。 1912年東京美術学校卒業。早稲田大学理工学部建築学科の助手となり，20年教授，59年の定年まで建築美学や装飾原理を教える。都市を通じて，そこで生活する民衆の生活に興味をいだき，都市の生活風俗を採集，記録しようとして舞台装置家の吉田謙吉らとともに考現学を創始する。考現学とは考古学が古い時代のことを考える学問であるのに対して，現代のことを考察する学問を意味する。最初の調査は 25年，当時の流行の先端をいく東京銀座で人々の服装や身ぶりを採集，記録した『1925年初夏東京銀座街風俗記録』である。第2次世界大戦後は，生活学を提唱し，72年日本生活学会を設立した。著書に『日本の民家』 (1922) ，『服装研究』 (47) がある。
