The capital of the Bienne department in western France. It is located on a plateau overlooking the Crans River, which flows into the Bienne River, a tributary of the Loire River. It is a strategic location in the Poitou lowlands that connects the Aquitaine and Paris basins, and was the site of many battles, including the Battle of Tours-Poitiers (732) and the Battle of Poitiers (1356). Today, it is a commercial city, with a thriving trade in wheat, wine, timber, and cattle. It also has industries such as machinery, printing, and textiles. Many Romanesque cathedrals and palaces remain, including Notre-Dame la Grande Basilica (11th-12th century), Gothic architecture such as Saint-Pierre Cathedral (12th-16th century), and Renaissance architecture.
