The de facto capital of Bolivia (the constitutional capital is Sucre). It is home to the presidential palace, other administrative agencies, and the National Assembly. Its population was 784,976 (1993). It is located in a bowl-shaped area that descends from the Altiplano (high plain) in western Bolivia, and with the city center at an elevation of 3,600 meters, it is the highest capital city in the world. It was founded by the Spaniards in 1548. The reason this land was chosen as a stopover between the Potosi silver mines and Lima, where the viceroyalty is located, was because it is in a valley, sheltered from the cold winds, and because there are gold mines there.La PazSource: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
