[died] c. 404, a poet of the late Roman Empire. A Greek who grew up in Alexandria, he lived in Rome and Milan from 395 to 404, and wrote official poems praising Emperor Honorius and his general Stilico and slandering their enemies. His epic poems about the Gothic Wars and the war against the African Usurper Guild are also poems in praise of General Stilico. These poems show extreme skill, powerful eloquence, and love for Mother Rome, and are full of allegory, allusion, and mythological episodes. His other works include a eulogy celebrating the marriage of Emperor Honorius, an unfinished mythological poem De Raptu Proserpinae, pastorals, and epigrams.
