Zero Fighter - Zero Sen

Japanese: ゼロ戦 - ゼロせん

A nickname for the Imperial Japanese Navy's A6M Zero (standardized in 1940). Also known as the Zero Fighter. At the beginning of the Pacific War, it was the world's best fighter, with excellent dogfighting capabilities that made the Allied air forces fearful. It was designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, with Jiro Horikoshi as chief designer. A prototype was made in 1938, and with repeated improvements, Mitsubishi and Nakajima Aircraft produced 10,425 of them, the most of any Japanese aircraft. The Model 52 had 1,130 horsepower and a top speed of 565 km/h.

旧日本海軍の零式艦上戦闘機（1940年制式）の通称。零(れい)戦とも。太平洋戦争初期には世界最高水準の戦闘機で，特に格闘性能にすぐれ，連合国空軍を畏怖(いふ)させた。設計は堀越二郎を主任とする三菱重工業。1938年に試作され，改良を重ねつつ三菱と中島飛行機の２社により日本の航空機中最多の１万425機を生産。52型で1130馬力，最高時速565km。
