… Parthia, which gained independence from the Seleucid Empire in the second half of the 3rd century BC, established its own monetary system under the influence of Hellenism. The units of currency were the drachma and the obolos (one-sixth of a drachma). The silver drachma was the standard currency, and bronze, copper, and sometimes brass coins also circulated in local markets. The front of the coins bears the portraits of the kings, usually facing left, and the back depicts a man in nomadic clothing, seated with a bow, probably the founder, Arsaces I. …
