Platypus (English spelling)

Japanese: カモノハシ(鴨嘴) - カモノハシ（英語表記）platypus

A monotreme aquatic mammal of the Platypus family (illustration) that retains some reptilian characteristics. It is found in eastern Australia and Tasmania. Like echidnas, it has a cloaca like birds and reptiles, and is egg-laying, but has hair and is a mammalian trait. There are many unknowns about its phylogenetic relationships, but it is thought to have followed a completely different evolutionary path from placental and marsupial animals. The first platypus known to the Zoological Society was a stuffed specimen that arrived at the British Museum from Australia via India in 1798.

爬虫類の特徴をとどめもつ単孔目カモノハシ科の水生哺乳類（イラスト）。オーストラリア東部とタスマニア島に分布する。ハリモグラとともに，鳥や爬虫類のように総排出孔をもち，卵生だが，体毛があって哺乳するという点では哺乳類の特徴をもつ。系統関係は不明な点が多いが，有胎盤類や有袋類とはまったく別の進化の道をたどったものと思われる。　1798年に，オーストラリアからインド経由で大英博物館に到着した剝製が，動物学会に知られた最初のカモノハシである。
