From late spring to summer, when heating through the ocean surface is significant, a layer with a large vertical gradient of water temperature appears in the surface mixed layer and gradually develops; this thermocline is called the seasonal thermocline. From autumn, when the ocean surface begins to cool, a new mixed layer appears near the ocean surface and develops due to mixing caused by convection, wind, and waves; the seasonal thermocline also increases in depth accordingly, and is absorbed into the main thermocline during the harsh winter.
