This disease was described by the French neurologist Pierre Marie (1853-1940), and refers to Marie's ataxia, a type of spinocerebellar degeneration. However, acromegaly and pulmonary hypertrophic osteoarthritis, which were also described by the same man, are sometimes also referred to as Marie's disease.
