A type of manganate. It is also called potassium manganate(VI). Its chemical formula is K 2 MnO 4 , and its formula weight is 197.1. It can be obtained as dark green crystals (orthorhombic crystal system) by melting manganese dioxide with potassium hydroxide and potassium nitrate and extracting with cold water, or by adding potassium permanganate to an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, heating until it turns green, and then cooling. It has a specific gravity of 2.778. It dissolves in a 2M aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide at 22.478 g/100 g (20°C). When heated to 500°C or higher, it releases oxygen and becomes K 2 MnO 3. It decomposes into manganese dioxide and potassium permanganate with water or acid, and the color of the solution changes from green to reddish purple. Adding excess alkali to this will return it to green again. For this reason, an aqueous solution of potassium manganate(VI) is sometimes called chameleon solution.
