Potassium manganate

A type of manganate. It is also called potassium manganate(VI). Its chemical formula is K ₂ MnO ₄ , and its formula weight is 197.1. It can be obtained as dark green crystals (orthorhombic crystal system) by melting manganese dioxide with potassium hydroxide and potassium nitrate and extracting with cold water, or by adding potassium permanganate to an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, heating until it turns green, and then cooling. It has a specific gravity of 2.778. It dissolves in a 2M aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide at 22.478 g/100 g (20°C). When heated to 500°C or higher, it releases oxygen and becomes K ₂ MnO _3. It decomposes into manganese dioxide and potassium permanganate with water or acid, and the color of the solution changes from green to reddish purple. Adding excess alkali to this will return it to green again. For this reason, an aqueous solution of potassium manganate(VI) is sometimes called chameleon solution.

マンガン酸塩の一つ。マンガン(Ⅵ)酸カリウムともいう。化学式K₂MnO₄、式量197.1。二酸化マンガンを水酸化カリウム、硝酸カリウムとともに融解して冷水で抽出するか、水酸化カリウム水溶液に過マンガン酸カリウムを加え、緑色になるまで加熱してから冷却すると、暗緑色の結晶（斜方晶系）として得られる。比重2.778。2M水酸化カリウム水溶液には、22.478g/100g（20℃）溶ける。500℃以上に熱すると酸素を放ってK₂MnO₃となる。水または酸により二酸化マンガンと過マンガン酸カリウムに分解し、溶液の色が緑色から赤紫色に変わる。これに過剰のアルカリを加えるとふたたび緑色となる。このためマンガン(Ⅵ)酸カリウムの水溶液をカメレオン液ということがある。
