Marie Byrd Land

Japanese: マリー･バード･ランド（英語表記）Marie Byrd Land

A part of West Antarctica centered at 80°S and 120°W. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the north, the Ross Ice Shelf and Ross Sea to the west, and a line connecting the southernmost part of the Ross Ice Shelf and Eights Coast to the east. It was explored by American RE Bird in 1929 and named after his wife. Apart from a mountain range on the Pacific coast, the area is an ice sheet area at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,500 m, with most of the basement below sea level. An American team established Byrd Base at the above site on January 1, 1957, for observations during the International Geophysical Year.

南極の南緯80゜，西経120゜を中心とした西南極大陸の一部。北は太平洋に接し，西はロス棚氷とロス海に，東はロス棚氷の最南部とエイツ海岸を結ぶ線で区切られている。1929年アメリカのR.E.バードによって探査され，妻の名がつけられた。太平洋岸に山群がある以外は，高度1000～1500mの氷床域で，基盤の大部分は海水面下にある。国際地球観測年の観測のためアメリカ隊は57年1月1日上記の地点にバード基地を建設した。
