Hikosan School - Hikosan

Japanese: 彦山派 - ひこさんは
Hikosan School - Hikosan
It is a branch of Shugendo practiced by a group of mountain ascetics based at Hikosan Gongensha Reisenji Temple in Kyushu (present-day Hikosan Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture). Since the Middle Ages, it has had parishioners throughout Kyushu, and in 1696 (Genroku 9), the Edo Shogunate officially recognized it as a branch head temple of Tendai Shugendo. There are various legends about its history, including its founding by the Northern Wei monk Zensho and a hunter (in the 25th year of the Keitai era), its revival by Horen of Usa, its founding by En no Gyoja and Jugen, and the founding of the Matsue Shinto ritual by Masukage (917-1006). From 1333 (Ganko 3), the lineage of the head priest Sukeari, said to be the son of Emperor Go-Fushimi, controlled the entire mountain, which continued until the Meiji Restoration.
