A type of Mexican ensemble. Originally a folk ensemble from the Jalisco region, it is now Mexico's leading popular music ensemble. The name mariachi is said to come from the fact that they were often called mariage (French for weddings) and other occasions. Today's standard lineup is 2-4 trumpets, 3-5 violins, and 3-5 guitars (Spanish guitar, vihuela (a small five-string guitar), guitarron (a large six-string guitar, etc.). Vocals are often added to this. It is characterized by the brilliant tone of the trumpets, the sweet melodies of the violins, and the fine rhythms of the guitars.
