A city located in central Victoria, Australia, 112 km (by road) west of Melbourne. Population 80,045 (2001). After the discovery of gold in 1851, it developed as a representative gold mining city, and after the gold mining declined, it became a regional hub, but various industries such as textiles and agricultural machinery also developed. It is well known as the site of the Eureka Fort incident (1854), which marked the beginning of the labour movement and democratization in Australia. Municipalization was achieved in 1870. Buildings from the gold mining town era remain within the city, and the former gold mining town has been restored for tourism purposes. The name comes from an aboriginal word meaning a place of rest.
