Mary of Bethany

Japanese: マリア[ベタニアの]（英語表記）Mary of Bethany

A character in the New Testament. In Luke 10:38 and following, she appears as a woman who "sat at the feet of the Lord and listened to his word," in contrast to her sister Martha. In John 11:12 and 12:1-11, she is a resident of Bethany with her brother Lazarus, and anoints Jesus' feet with expensive perfumed oil. Luke 7:36 and following presents this story as the act of an anonymous prostitute, but she has been identified with Mary Magdalene, who was thought to have had the same past, and with Mary of Bethany, resulting in confusion between the two originally separate Marys.

新約聖書中の人物。《ルカによる福音書》10章38節以下で姉のマルタとは対照的に〈主の足下にすわって，御言に聞き入る〉女性として登場する。《ヨハネによる福音書》11章と12章1～11節では，兄弟のラザロとともにベタニアの住人であり，イエスの足に高価な香油を塗る。この物語を《ルカによる福音書》7章36節以下は，ある匿名の遊女の行為として述べるが，この女が一方で同じ前歴を持つと考えられたマグダラのマリアと同一視され，他方でベタニアのマリアと同一視されたため，元来別個の2人のマリアが混同される結果となった。
