Life type

Japanese: 生活型 - せいかつがた（英語表記）life type

A classification of the life style of an organism. When this is reflected in its external appearance, it is called a life form, but it is difficult to draw a strict line between the two. Life form is a useful concept for understanding the ecological aspects of an organism, rather than the systematic aspects, and various classifications are possible depending on the aspect taken up. In the broadest sense, it includes physiological aspects such as metabolic patterns. For example, there are classifications such as _C4 plants in terms of photosynthetic patterns, and ammoniazoans, ureozoans, and uric acidozoans in terms of nitrogen metabolic end products.

生物の生活様式の類型。それが外形に反映されたものを生活形（せいかつけい）というが，この二つの間に厳密な線を引くことは難しい。生活型は生物の系統的な側面ではなく，生態的な側面を把握するうえで有力な概念であり，取りあげる側面によってさまざまな類型化が可能である。最も広く取るときには代謝様式のような生理的な側面まで含める。例えば光合成様式についてのC₄植物とか，窒素代謝終産物についてのアンモニア動物，尿素動物，尿酸動物とかの類型がそれである。
