Pentecost Island

An island in the New Hebrides archipelago that forms the Republic of Vanuatu in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It is a long, narrow island, 61 km long and 12 km wide at its widest point, with an area of 438 km2. It has a population of about 7,000. Linguistically, it is divided into three regions: the north, central, and south. The altitude increases as you move south (the highest point is 934 m). The north, where the Prime Minister of Vanuatu is born, is one of the most sophisticated regions in Vanuatu, and has produced many important people. All are Christians and have a high level of education, but they also have a strong attachment to traditional culture, and the pig-slaughtering ceremony is a major concern in people's lives.
