(1) A type of Spanish folk song and dance called fandango, unique to the region of Malaga. The music consists of six phrases based on a certain harmonic progression, and a poem of five lines (one line repeated) is sung slowly. (2) A type of "cante flamenco" that was very popular around the end of the 19th century. Famous singers (cantaores) such as El Mejizo, Juan Breva, and Antonio Chacón created this style by adding the unique singing style of the Roma (formerly known as Gypsies) to traditional folk songs. The Spanish composer Albéniz, as well as the French composers Chabrier and Ravel, have all incorporated the rhythm and melody of this song into their instrumental works.
