An island at the mouth of the Amazon River in the state of Para in northern Brazil. Part of it faces the Atlantic Ocean and is the largest inland island of its kind in the world. Its area is 48,000 km2 and population is 193,392 (1980). It was formed by sedimentation from the Amazon River, and the eastern half was formed earlier, with much of it remaining unsubmerged (terra firme) even during the rainy season. In the dry season, vast grasslands open up, and livestock farming (especially water buffalo) is thriving. The western half is covered by igapó (underwater forest) and has numerous navigable waterways, which are submerged during the high water season.
