Frankincense - Nyuko

In English, it is called olibanum. It is an aromatic resin that exudes from certain trees of the Burseraceae family that grow on the coast of South Arabia and in Somaliland in East Africa. It gets its name from its color and shape, which resembles dripping, solidified milk, and when burned, it gives off a sweet, elegant fragrance. Along with myrrh, it is the oldest precious incense that began to be used in ancient Egypt. At the time, frankincense was considered to be "something of the gods, and even the gods themselves," and it was considered essential to smoke it when worshiping the heavens or the gods. Even today, the aromatic components of frankincense are an essential ingredient in creating the scents of oriental perfumes and high-quality incense.

英語ではオリバナムという。南アラビアの海岸地方や、東アフリカのソマリランドに産するカンラン科のある種の木から滲出(しんしゅつ)する芳香性の樹脂で、ミルクがしたたり固まったような色と形をしているところからこの名があり、燃やすと甘く優雅な香りを発する。没薬(もつやく)とともに古代エジプトで使われ始めた最古の貴重な薫香料(インセンス)で、当時乳香は「神のもの、さらに神そのもの」と考え、天や神を祀(まつ)る際これを薫ずることが最上不可欠とされていた。今日でも乳香の芳香成分は、東洋調香水（香水）や高級線香の香りづくりに欠かせない香料となっている。
