Mount Bizan

Japanese: 眉山 - びざん
Mount Bizan
An isolated mountain in Tokushima City. It is 290m above sea level. In the Man'yoshu, it is written, "A mountain of Awa that looks like an eyebrow in the clouds," and the name Bizan is derived from this. In ancient times, it was worshipped as a sacred mountain, and in folklore, it was a mountain that welcomed the gods. It later became a defensive mountain for the castle town, but now the summit is an observation point, and there are promenades, driveways, and ropeways leading to the summit, which is Bizan Park. It is a famous cherry blossom spot, and Yakushiji Kasuga Shrine is located on the northeastern foot of the mountain, and Chikurin-in Temple is located on the southern foot of the mountain. There is a pagoda in the memorial tower for the dead of World War II, and the Moraes Museum, which displays the belongings of Moraes, who, like Lafcadio Hearn, introduced Japanese culture to the world.

Mt. Bizan

A parasitic volcano (parasitic volcano) located on the east side of Mount Unzen in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula in the southeastern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It is also called "Bizan". It belongs to Shimabara City. Its elevation is 819m. The mountain is divided into Tenguyama and Shichimenyama. In the 4th year of the Kansei era (1792), an earthquake caused Tenguyama to collapse (→ Collapse of Mount Bizan on Mount Unzen), burying the southern part of Shimabara Castle Town and creating Kujukushima in the sea. It also caused damage in Higo on the opposite shore, and many lives were lost on both sides. This incident is known as "Shimabara disaster, Higo nuisance" and is passed down through the generations. It belongs to Unzen-Amakusa National Park.
