…The first part, which forms the backbone of Ricardo's theory, attempts to explain the theory of value that A. Smith had left behind in the dualism of the theory of invested labor and the theory of controlled labor, consistently with the theory of invested labor. His theory of differential rent, his macroscopic dynamic theory, which discusses the long-term macroscopic distribution relationship between the three classes of landlords, capitalists, and workers, centering on the problem of the declining trend in the rate of profit, and his theory of comparative production costs in international trade, all had a great influence on economics thereafter. The problem of the invariable measure of value related to the theory of invested labor value was a lifelong problem for Ricardo, but in the third edition in 1921, this point was corrected and the famous Chapter 31, "On Machinery," was added. His theory of the invariable measure of value is now being developed in a new way as the theory of "standard commodities" in P. Sraffa's "The Production of Commodities by Commodities" (1960). …
