Kiryu [city] - Kiryu

Japanese: 桐生[市] - きりゅう
Kiryu [city] - Kiryu
A city in the eastern part of Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1921. It occupies the southwest foot of the Ashio Mountains, the basin of the Watarase River and its tributary, the Kiryu River, and the mountainous area east of Mount Akagi. The city center, located at the confluence of the two rivers, has been a market town for silk and textiles since the late Middle Ages. In the early modern period, the Kiryu Silk Market was opened, and silk textiles developed significantly when they came under the protection of the shogunate. After World War II, the city produced a lot of obi fabric, omeshi, clothing fabric, and clothing lining, which have been highly praised overseas, but have been stagnating. Instead, general machinery and electrical equipment industries have developed, and they now account for about 60% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value (2001). It is served by the Ryomo Line and Tobu Kiryu Line, and is the starting point of the Watarase Keikoku Railway and Jomo Electric Railway. In June 2005, the Seta District villages of Niisato and Kurohone were incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 274.45 km 2 . 121,704 people (2010).
