Peace treaty concluded between Sweden and Russia on September 7, 1809, at Fredrikshamn (now Hamina, Finland). In 1808, Russia attacked Sweden, which was allied with Britain, at the behest of Napoleon. With the war going against Sweden, a coup broke out in Sweden, the king was dethroned, and Sweden was unable to continue the war, so it surrendered to Russia. In the peace treaty, Sweden ceded all of Finland, which it had held for nearly 500 years, as well as the island of Åland and part of the mainland, and was also forced to join the Continental System, turning what had been a great power in the Baltic Sea into a small one.
