A small orchid plant that grows on rock walls and tree bark (illustration). The leaves are evergreen and resemble those of the fern Bulbophyllum. The rhizome is long and thin, and has no pseudobulbs. The evergreen leaves are elliptical and about 1 cm long. In May and June, a thin flower stalk about 10 mm long emerges from the leaf axil, and bears a single flower. The flower is pale yellow, about 4 mm in diameter, and opens downward. The lip has reddish purple spots. There are four pollen masses. It is distributed in the upper part of Honshu from the Kanto region westward, Shikoku, Kyushu, Taiwan, and China. The genus Bulbophyllum is characterized by leaves that fold in half inside the bud, flower stalks that emerge from the axils of the pseudobulb, a movable lip, and four pollen masses without stalks. About 1,000 species have been reported from the tropics to the subtropics.
