A village in Chiisagata County in central eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,003 (1995). Located southwest of Ueda City. 80% of the village area is covered by forests and fields, with settlements scattered around the terraces along the Urano River, which flows northeast in the eastern part of the village. In ancient times, it was the location of Urano Station on the Tosando road, which is recorded in the Engishiki, and Shiobara Ranch was also located there. In the past, many people were engaged in agriculture, such as sericulture and rice cultivation, but with the trend of part-time work, the number of people working in other industries is increasing. In addition to producing rice, apples, shiitake mushrooms, matsutake mushrooms, and vegetables, the village also raises beef and dairy cows. 長野県中東部,小県(ちいさがた)郡の村。人口5003(1995)。上田市の南西に位置する。村域の8割が山林・原野で占められ,東部を北東流する浦野川沿いの段丘を中心に集落が散在する。古代には《延喜式》に記された東山道の浦野駅の所在地で,塩原牧も置かれた。かつては養蚕,稲作など農業に従事する者が多かったが,兼業化が進み他産業従事者が増えている。米を中心にリンゴ,シイタケ,マツタケ,蔬菜類を産するほか,肉牛,乳牛の飼育も行われる。
