It is also called ethylenimine and azacyclopropane. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with an ammonia-like odor. Its boiling point is 55-56°C, and its specific gravity is 0.8371 (20°C). It is highly toxic and causes severe damage to the human body when it comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, or when it is inhaled or comes into oral contact. It is also flammable and explosive. It is synthesized by reacting β-aminoethyl sulfate with sodium hydroxide. In addition to exhibiting properties as a secondary amine, it also undergoes ring-opening reactions to form a three-membered ring compound.
