Volstead Act

…A law that prohibited the brewing, sale, transportation, import and export of alcoholic beverages in the United States from 1920 to 1933. During the First World War, as the temperance movement and moral consciousness grew significantly, Congress passed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution in 1917, which stipulated prohibition of alcohol. In October 1919, the Volstead Act, named after the bill's sponsor, was enacted, and went into effect in January of the following year. However, it was unrealistic to eradicate the habit of drinking in American society that had returned to "normal," and demand remained strong, so gangsters including Al Capone set their sights on this, making huge profits from bootlegging and selling alcohol, and thereby expanding their territory. …
