Located on the border between Iwate and Akita prefectures, this non-volcanic mountain range is part of the Ou Mountains. Between Sengan Pass (894m) in the north and Shiraki Pass (602m) in the south, there are mountains such as Mt. Mokko (1278m), Mt. Waga (1439m), Mt. Yakushi (1214m), and Mt. Mahiru (1059m). It is made up of Tertiary sandstone, shale, and tuff, and small outcrops of volcanic rock and granite can also be seen. On August 31, 1896 (Meiji 29), the Rikuu earthquake (magnitude 7.5) with its epicenter near Mahirudake caused the Wagagawa Fault on the Iwate Prefecture side and the Mahirudake Fault on the Akita Prefecture side.
